What this policy covers
This policy applies to the public Witness Corner website and its publication pages. The private contributor area also uses authentication information to restrict editorial access.
Information used to operate the site
- Basic request information. Hosting and security providers may process information normally sent when a browser requests a page, such as an IP address, browser type, requested page, and time of the request.
- Approximate location for weather. The publication may derive an approximate city and region from the visitor's network connection to display local weather. It does not request precise device location. The application does not add this location to reader profiles or its readership-metrics database.
- Aggregate readership events. The publication counts article views, reading milestones, source-link selections, shares, and internal article selections. The application stores these as totals by article and day, without a reader identifier.
- Theme preference. If a visitor changes the color theme, the browser stores that selection locally so the site can remember it.
- Contributor authentication. The private editorial area temporarily stores sign-in tokens in the contributor's browser session and records the authenticated editor on article changes.
Cookies and similar technologies
Witness Corner does not currently use advertising cookies, cross-site behavioral tracking, or third-party analytics cookies. The public site uses browser local storage only to remember a visitor's color-theme choice. The private contributor area uses session storage for authentication; that information is removed when the session ends or the contributor signs out.
If these practices change, this policy and the site's privacy controls will be updated before nonessential tracking is introduced.
Service providers and outside links
Amazon Web Services provides hosting, content delivery, application, and security infrastructure. Open-Meteo supplies weather data using approximate coordinates, and NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center supplies geomagnetic information. When a visitor opens an external source or uses embedded third-party media, that provider's own privacy practices apply.
Sale and sharing
Witness Corner does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The site does not use reader information to build advertising profiles.
Retention and security
Information is retained only as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, maintain, and understand the publication, or as required by law. Reasonable safeguards are used, but no internet service can guarantee absolute security.
Your choices
You can remove the saved theme preference through your browser's site-data controls. You can also configure your browser to block local storage or other site data, although some preferences may no longer persist. Because Witness Corner does not sell or share personal information for behavioral advertising, there is currently no sale or sharing for a California opt-out request to stop.
